MBBS Study Essentials for First Year
The three subjects, the three notebooks, and the habits that carry you to second year.

Short answer
First-year MBBS essentials: one unruled A4 notebook each for Anatomy, Physiology and Biochemistry, a standard textbook per subject, a consistent weekly revision slot, and a diagram-first note habit. Buy less than you think; write more than feels necessary.
First year is three subjects and one adjustment: medical school is volume, not difficulty. The essentials below are about surviving the volume.
The three notebooks
- Anatomy — the heaviest drawing load; unruled pages are non-negotiable
- Physiology — graphs, cycles and mechanism arrows
- Biochemistry — pathways that need a full page each
The three habits
- Same-day completion: finish each lecture page within 24 hours, while the missing pieces are retrievable
- Weekly revision slot: two hours, weekend, re-derive the week's diagrams from memory
- Diagram-first: if you can draw it, you can explain it — the viva rewards exactly this
What to skip in first year
Ten reference books per subject, pre-made 'topper notes', and any system requiring daily maintenance. The stationery checklist covers what's actually worth carrying.
